Abstract Metamaterials enable subwavelength tailoring of light–matter interactions, driving fundamental discoveries which fuel novel applications in areas ranging from compressed sensing to quantum engineering. Importantly, the metallic and dielectric resonators static metamaterials are comprised present an open architecture amenable materials integration. Thus, incorporating responsive such as semiconductors, liquid crystals, phase-change materials, or (e.g., superconductors, 2D etc.) imbue with dynamic properties, facilitating development active tunable devices harboring enhanced even entirely electromagnetic functionality. Ultimately, control derives ability craft local fields; accomplished using a host external stimuli modify electronic optical properties embedded into regions resonators. We provide broad overview this frontier area research, introducing concepts presenting strategies that include electronic, optical, mechanical, thermal, magnetic stimuli. The examples presented range microwave visible wavelengths, utilizing wide realize spatial light modulators, effective nonlinear media, on-demand optics, polarimetric imaging but few examples.
